Pros

Structure , sop, abundance of experience

Cons

Novartis was the first company I worked at post grad. I’ve since worked at 3 other companies and now hold a senior director title. Reflecting back, this was not the best place to work. My manager was a large part to blame, but the company fostered a culture that condoned her personality type and behavior. She was a micromanager to the max, had no respect for peoples time , was inefficient, and a very poor leader. She also exhibited harassment behavior strangely towards male colleagues. She had been at Novartis for close to 20 years. Her behavior was not addressed once in my two years employed there. There was a constant trend of her direct reports quitting because of her. On my exit interview I wanted to give feedback but HR held the interview in the lobby of the building…who can feel comfortable speaking up? The clinical trial management organization felt like high school. It was all about optics and initiatives and who can be the “loudest” about their work. Overall the culture at Novartis was awful.

Pros

Once upon a time, still 5 years ago, it was a great company to work for. Capable people, experience sharing, listening management. Then center of excellence was moved to India, several outsourcing companies took over the full ownership of internal systems and processes, massive lay off of mainly experienced people started, incapable people got promoted or hired to management position, at the same time core IT systems started being replaced and Sandoz separated. Most of the managers are without experience and do not care about people wellbeing, efficiency of processes, usage of internal know-how and improvement of collaboration. The political games took 10% of my job 5 years ago, currently it got to 60%.

Cons

When discovering that behind the massive lay off there is another game - to have less internal FTEs in order to have better stock price, it was quite disappointing. At the same time there are hired many external FTEs through outsourcing, which costs much more money than internals and those external colleagues are coming without the needed experience and knowledge of internal systems, processes and specifics, so at the end it costs even more money. However this doesn´t seem to matter at all, as less internals simply mean better stock price.

Pros

Good products. Benefits are solid.

Cons

Culture is horrible. Managers gaslight staff. Staff are complacent and let managers bully medical directors. Marketing directs medical staff. Public face of company is a lie. Compliance investigators are a joke. HR promotes bullying management. No stability to speak of.
