Pros

It’s a job I guess

Cons

Horrible and short during the pandemic. Instead of paying staff more they’d rather hire in travel nurses. Med surg is already hard yet you have charge nurses standing outside your patients room telling you you didn’t perform your 5 ps correctly. You have no support at night and you get 6 patients so if you’re drowning you just drown. A lot of the charge nurses will not lift up a finger and sit at the desk. They will not complete your admission history for new patients if you’re behind nor will they give your other patients pain meds when your busy. To say there is a shortage of nurses, we get treated poorly and they wonder why no one sticks around. As soon as I find another job I’m leaving expeditiously.

Pros

The health benefits are lovely, as I'm sure they would be in most healthcare jobs. I can see most Northside Hospital physicians for little to no cost. There's a pension plan after you've been here for 5 years, which I understand is uncommon.

Cons

Our jobs are so frequently threatened by management that it's a running joke. My team and I have come out of otherwise solemn meetings laughing about guesses that we had made. "How many times was that, 11? 12? I lost count!" HR doesn't respond to inquiries or complaints, and my team has been chastised by management for reaching out to them with issues. My direct manager is held to a much lower standard than her subordinates. She comes in late, leaves early, lies directly to us and her management, fabricates stories, and lacks a basic understanding of her job requirements. It's extremely frustrating to work in such an environment. Covid-19 has shone an even brighter light on the situation with a reckless disregard for our safety. Even though our jobs can easily be done remotely, management has found every excuse to deny us the privilege of safety. Cleaning products were understandably in short supply, but even personal products from home were met with criticism. "What's that SMELL? Oh, well. Thank you for cleaning up I guess." Non-bleach-based products were eventually purchased for our use, but the contact time was so long that they were impractical for daily use. On one occasion, an employee's private health information was even leaked to their superiors without permission or any repercussions from HR or employee relations.
