Pros

There has been some fresh blood added to management in the space bioscience division in the last year. These individuals are committed to improving facilities and expanding the research. There is a general sense that the future of space bioscience is wide open.

Cons

There is some old guard who seem resistant to change. It's fine for the civil servants among them since they have a guaranteed job. There is a fair amount of bad blood between some members of the division, both civil servants and contractors, because of budget stress, conflicting and stubborn personalities and perhaps a little insecurity. Unfortunately, everyone suffers as a result. Contractors are shuffled around at the whim of civil servants (clients) and the contracting company as if we are a commodity and not individuals with career aspirations.

Pros

The Pros of having intern at Ames Research Center is that you are able to communicate with several other departments. Also, you are given several projects so you are able to meet different people in different departments.

Cons

The only Con that I had from my experience there is the living at the lodge that NASA provides. Yes, it is cheaper than living outside of the Ames but you also want a proper place to stay while your away from home.

Pros

We work on stuff that will end up in every 5th graders science book. 95% of the people that work here love their job, and are willing to help you out. Good team environment. It is really refreshing to work with intelligent people.

Cons

It's government, so new ideas from a process perspective are slow to implement. However it is a "Science" government agency, so new ideas from a technology standpoint are welcome (if you present the idea in using the correct government "process"). I work KSC, the engineering - rocket launching side of NASA. Sometimes work is a "hurry-up and wait" environment. The average age out here is much higher than industry, so I'd say 5-10% of the workforce needs to retire and let the younger generation take leadership roles.
