Not what it used to be

Pros

Technical excellence, innovation, and customer advocacy have long been a hallmark. Lots of great people. Personal Time Off (PTO) policy has remained as a strong competitive benefit.

Cons

During my time at Motorola, the total number of employees went down by over 90%. It was sad to watch. When they froze the pension for long-time participants, it was a huge blow to loyalty and trust. Years of spin-offs, sell-offs, outsourcing, offshoring, benefit takeaways, quarterly layoffs, and continuous reorganization resulted in an atmosphere of fear and loathing. In general, it was a "good job", but you were always in fear you would be next and trying to figure out how to avoid the inevitable.

Pros

It is going down and down, but will be shown by management as being "up and up"

Cons

This is a company with reverse pyramid. In this company you will find 20 VP's, 40 Senior Directors, 120 Directors, 280 Senior Manager, 1200 Managers followed by 1000 employees. When they have to cut people all folks at the tops will be protected, and anyone doing the real work will be let go. Ninety percent of managers or senior managers do not have any college degree (at the most associate) and cannot either provide technical direction or do anything for people growth. This company is all about "shares buy back" to boost "artificially" stock price, increase dividends, sell businesses whenever nothing works.

used to be good

Pros

Motorola used to care about their employees, good benefits including healthcare and vacation time. In the public safety business there was purpose to the work, protecting the first responders with rock solid communication.

Cons

Now there is no job security, layoffs happen every quarter. Land Mobile Radio business market is shrinking leading to cutting of costs. Jobs are moving overseas to low cost centers. Many of the good people are leaving and not being replaced, making those left behind to try and pick up the pieces.
