Pros

Decent pay and good benefits. Prior to the last two waves of layoffs, it was not difficult to maintain a good work/life balance.

Cons

Information Technology is treated as an expense to be reduced, rather than a strategic asset to be developed. If you are a low to mid level developer, you will most likely be outsourced. MetLife was aggressively outsourcing IT jobs before the current economic crisis, and now the current crisis gives management the perfect opportunity to accelerate that trend. The current performance review system is a farce. Talented people, hard workers often get a mediocre rating simply due to the whim of a manager who may have never met the person or reviewed his or her work in detail.

Pros

This is a good place to work in terms of movement and development. There are lots of programs that are available to current employees to help us improve ourselves and to become more valueable to the company. MetLife also offers a really good benefits package and try to help you with choosing what is best for you through their online programs and cost comparison calculators. There are also other incentive programs to keep you up to date on the programs and offers that available to us, like the WOW program to get $100 off of our insurance premiums next year. They also offer programs to get you to see other work that is available at MetLife and do a type of internship in another department.

Cons

The management does not always know what is going on. There are a lot of times when one side doesn't seem to know what the other side is doing. Everything is done last minute and the call center is always the last to know. There are a lot of times that answers from one manager will conflict with another manager. Other days, there will be a question that no one has an answer to, and to get an answer we have to wait several days. A lot of the management doesn't let you know what is expected of you and it makes it very hard to know what you should be doing and how far on a limb you should go to help a client.

Pros

MetLife is a company that strives for diversity. The company has received numerous accolades for achieving a diverse & vibrant workforce. People of different races & sexual orientations can strive at Met Life. Also working mothers will find Met a great place to resume a career. Other positives would include an excellent benefits package along with a pension plan. Few companies today over this perk so it is something worth knowing. Also at least in my case the road map to rising up thru the ranks has been made clear by my management. So needless to say I think Met is a great place to work.

Cons

First & foremost the lack of communication from senior management about initiatives the company will be undertaking. Met can be quite secretive & some times downright paranoid about letting anyone know too much. In other words met is not transparent enough for my tastes. Also the on board process can be a pain. New associates in my area have no idea what is expected of them, or what they need to know in order to be successful at their job. Met must do a better job at this. Last but not least the Human Resources department is an absolute joke.
