Pros

Excellent benefits - 401(k) with 3% match, plus a pension. Work-life balance for me personally is very good; however, one's experience as far as work/life balance highly depends on one's department and team.

Cons

Has been reorganizing on a consistent and non-stop basis since 1996. Change can be good and is often needed; however, this company reorganizes too often and changes direction constantly. One year I actually had 9 bosses - they were either fired, quit or moved to another team. Major reorgs have meant major layoffs. At MetLife, you are always waiting for the other shoe to drop (being laid off). It is a culture of fear and instability. Instability for one's job, structure of one's area and the business objectives of the company down to one's area. Right now, the company has decided there is no growth opportunity in the US individual market so here is very little investment there. In fact, the company is moving most of corporate individual market employees (known as "retail") to North Carolina because they feel the real estate and talent pool are cheaper and they do not need the caliber of talent found in the NY metro area (including NY and CT) and other metro areas in the US. Senior executive management (CEO and down a few levels) are unpredictable and extremely short sighted. They have taken what was once a great company for its customers and employees and turned it into a cold, chaotic company that can't focus. If you accept a corporate position at this company - especially in NC when those offices open - be prepared for the instability and insecurity. In NC, the organization will be new - which mean the reorging will be fast, furious and even more often than it has been over the last several years. Proceed with great caution and give careful consideration. After more than 15 years with this company as a top-rated employee, I have been actively job searching. What senior management has done to this company's culture, values and focus is beyond disappointing and I am personally saddened by its misguided direction.

Pros

I did not work in a big center but a field sales office. So had the advantages of a large company - such as great benefits and wide opportunity as well as the benefits of a smaller office - more informal atmosphere and a close knit staff.

Cons

Very structured. Not much creativity needed. "Corporate" was somewhat demanding and inflexible. Not too much Con actually.
