Pros

Merck is a great place for benefits and recognition (such as lunch passes, movie tickets, award dinners, and just notes to say thank you), in my department at least. They recently increased the number of vacation days we get per year. They also just started a more flexible work week where you can work from home part time, have a 4 day work week, or other arrangements. Also, since the company is so large, there is a lot of opportunity to move around and try new positions and become more well rounded. The people I work with are the best! They keep me coming back every day with the family-type atmosphere.

Cons

Right now things are in a a transition state -- we are implementing SAP, which in the end should make day to day transactions easier, but in the mean time is creating quite a stir. Many trainings and "hyper-care" stages are on their way! Senior management is sometimes inaccessable, in a way they seem to be making decisions on their own and there is a very subdivided oganization, but I know there are strategies in place to make this better, so I am optimistic for now.

Pros

Merck has a very good mission and vision. Good Company overall. Our Vaccines are the tops! Good pay - but I think other companies are catching up or surpassing us.

Cons

People are overworked, under appreciated, and morale is very low. The communication is inconsistent and Sr. Mgt. relies on a "whisper down the lane" approach which is very risky for errors. Who do I work for? What should I be doing? There is too much ambiguity right now. Change is good but it has been constantly changing and we are not sure what our end goal is.

Pros

Excellent values and principles that really point the direction leaders must follow. Excellent compensation and genuine interest in continuous improvement in all aspects of the business. Need for change is clear in leaders' minds. Flexibility and customer focus being valued more as it is enforced within the new culture. More frequent communication and webcasts by Senior Corporate Management through e-mails and web casts as compared to previous CEO. More open culture approaching a risk-taking attitude. Work/life balance is very much emphasized and encouraged among all employees.

Cons

Hysterical downsizing. Lack of judgement and appreciation for people that really get the job done. Favoritism. Aristocratic and dictatorial style by local senior management not allowing true challenging of the status quo. Works like a Company surrounded by mirrors with appreciation of outside world. Arrogant style. Lack of authenticity. Full pipeline but no quantifiable results.
