Bad management - stay away

Pros

Reputable firm, intelligent business leaders, good benefits I worked in finance for 5 years. I had a great supervisor for most of the time I was employed at Mercer, and had excellent performance reviews. I always did the extra mile to assist the business leaders. However, due to restructuring I was eventually assigned to a bad manager and ended up leaving the company.

Cons

Very political. Finance work environment felt like being in high school over again, lots of bullying, non stop drinking even if the work is not yet completed and you get in trouble for not joining the happy hours. Finance Leader keeps a tab of how many she laid off over the years and brags about it in the staff room. Human Resource does not follow company policies in handling employee concerns. Poor performers are protected if you are friends with the Finance Leader. Good performers end up leaving. Finance Leader blatantly discriminates on certain ethnic race. I also heard from my colleagues that some of them did not get a bonus even if they work hard like everyone else. Management only gives bonus to who they personally favored not based on work performance.

Mercer Response

Former colleague, We appreciate the feedback you have provided – both on what worked for you during your time at Mercer and where we need to improve. We understand that organizational/management changes are hard to adapt to, but change is critical in the fast-paced global environment we are in, and as we spearhead the Future of Work. We are disappointed about how you felt about the company environment and want to emphasize that our company’s greatest resource is the collective talent and diverse experiences of our colleagues. The more inclusive we are, the more we can achieve together. Your comments about bullying and discrimination are very concerning; especially at Mercer we have zero-tolerance for bullying and discrimination of any kind and encourage colleagues to contact HR, their managers and any manager, in addition to our confidential compliance hotline whenever they encounter any issue of that nature. Lastly, there are many factors that sit between the goals we set for our overall business and the goals that are set at an individual level – but one common theme prevails which is to reward our talent fairly and transparently. We would like to understand the situations you describe in detail, so if you wish please send an email to ColleagueFeedback@Mercer.com. We wish you the best in your future and thank you for your contributions at Mercer.

Old school consulting

Pros

Vacation time is generous if you can take it. Mature employees. Really good on diversity and inclusion. Some really smart highly knowledgeable SMEs.

Cons

Zero onboarding. Very old school tops down management. Billable hour targets changed mid year without warning. Terrible IT infrastructure - hard to get your client work done. Nepotism was a big issue on my team. No rhyme or reason on bonus payouts - you get what you get but don’t ask why or how it was calculated. Probably the biggest issue is low salaries and zero to barely there annual increase. For an HR company there is zero HR and the cobblers children really have no shoes. Losing a lot of people over the last year mainly due to wage issue and employees leaving for higher salaries and better management.
