Pros

Great set of clients, strong brand in the market, very solid capabilities. Location ok. Solid pension contribution.

Cons

The culture is quite depressing, and leaders do not seem to care or know how to speak with people. I feel sorry for the graduates working there, work should not be this dull. Tenured lifetimers in charge of the business lacking external experience and not interested in change or upsetting the status quo.

Don't do it!

Pros

They sell it really well during the interview process to lead you to believe they are a progressive company that believes and supports employee growth, unfortunately reality will tell you otherwise.

Cons

It is a sad cyclical place to be at where unfortunately the power dynamics benefits those that suck up to keep their jobs. Immature and inexperienced leadership leads the way and if you voice your input it will be ignored and you might even be slandered for it. Really toxic and hostile environment, they do not preach or put into practice what they consult on.

Pros

You get exposed to a lot of companies and you learn a lot about employer benefits. There's a kind of unwarranted, self-proclaimed reputation that Mercer has among benefits consulting firms. Don't be fooled.

Cons

Many senior consultants here are probably pathologically psychotic. This is a problem insofar as you're subject to their psychosis. To be honest, it may have been the result of the fraternity-like hazing they had to endure in the riveting world of benefits to get to where they are. Being successful at Mercer, particularly in their health and benefits division, has a lot to do with being able to cope with psychosis (i.e. getting reamed, meeting absurd expectations, compromising on ethical values) - this is often called "managing personalities".
