Pros

- Medallians identify and unlock potential in each other - Dynamic environment fueled by growth, learning, and refinement of best practices - Inspiring place to trail-blaze an industry, especially in the B2B setting

Cons

- Ambiguity around career progression as a byproduct of company's unprecedented growth. - Intermittent grey areas around role responsibility and division of labor - again, due to positive growth and new challenges

Wow - thank you. I love your descriptors of our workplace environment: dynamic, learning, refining. These qualities are critical to our successful growth. I appreciate you recognizing that. Thank you also for identifying some areas of improvement. Our high growth environment has had its casualties. A clear career path for certain roles is one of them. As a startup, roles do change constantly. Often the change is positive. For example, our customer org just announced a massive round of promotions. Plus some of our most successful people have gained broad and wide exposure through non-linear paths. That said, I understand that change and uncertainty can be frustrating and even scary. Thank you for reinforcing that we still have room to improve. If you have any additional insights, please stop by my office. -Amy

Pros

From what I could gather, the culture at HQ was pretty great. I was a remote employee but spent a decent amount of time in Palo Alto and the people in the office seemed genuinely warm and intelligent.

Cons

The sales organization is abysmal and is filled with shady snakes in the grass who will coil up and strike any chance they get. It's drilled into your head during new-hire orientation that mistakes are okay as long as you learn from them and grow, but this mentality is not shared by the sales organization AT ALL. In the sales organization, even slight missteps are not tolerated and not selling millions of dollars in your first few months will get you let go. Leadership are clique-y and are promoted based on tenure and not merit. And after hearing what I've heard from friends who are still in the sales org, I got out of there just in time as it seems to be imploding now.

Yikes -- I’m really sorry you had such a negative experience. I wouldn't want to work in the climate you describe either. That said, your perception of the sales organization is radically different from mine. I'd like to clear up a few misperceptions. First, we do not demand that reps sell millions of dollars in their first few months (though some do) or else they get let go. In fact, the expected ramp time is nine months, though many reps ramp more quickly than that. Reps that are doing the things asked of them but need more than nine months are given more time. Second, we do not demand perfection. We invest heavily in training -- reps regularly talk about how much they've learned at Medallia (e.g., "more in 7 months here than the 10 years prior"). Third, we promote based on merit, not tenure -- if we were not merit-based, we could not achieve the outstanding results we do, including a sales employee NPS in the 70s and an average productivity of 150%, both of which are best in class. Plus, we've grown so much in the past 3 years there's not much “tenure” to speak of. Fourth, the sales organization is not imploding, quite the opposite. The team just closed its biggest quarter (and fiscal year) ever. That said, within any company, there can be pockets that underperform the rest of the organization. If you got caught in one such pocket -- as it sounds you may have -- I'd love to understand more. Please ping me directly. In the meantime, I will pass along your review to our head of sales. We want to address any parts of the sales organization that may not be living up to our standards. Best of luck in your future career.

Thank you for your feedback. I love that you mention collaboration and smarts together, implying that intellect alone is not enough -- we need people who value both. Your comment about innovation surprised me. We continue to innovate at hyper speed, both launching entirely new projects and iterating on our "legacy products", which are only 2-3 years old. The pace is only going to increase as we are on track to hire almost 100 engineers this year. Clearly we need to do a better job of communicating our innovation. The product team is presenting at the fireside on Jan 29 if you can attend. If you cannot, the presentation will also be recorded. Please let us know how else we can more effectively communicate. We don't want to leave people with misperceptions about our product innovation (or anything else, for that matter). Thanks for raising this to my attention. - Amy
