Pros

Joining the VFX industry. People, but there’s always good-normal-bad people in every company. Projects are attractive, they will give you a nice demo reel if that’s what you’re looking for.

Cons

I’ve found that their basic problem is an absolute lack of communication, between departments and even insise the same group. They don’t care about anything but deadlines. You don’t feel like a part of a team. No work for months and then full overtime. They have a big problem there and it doesn’t look that they will change anything, even with all the big companies coming to Montreal. Low salaries, dozens of academy people with tons of really bad paid work. Juniors doing senior work FOR YEARS. Maybe the pipeline is good, but if you have to fight for every small piece of information it becomes disgusting. You get tired of waiting to receive answers for something they should be taking way more care than you.

Pros

-working with the talented artists in the building -the floor and people on it made the studio feel like home. -worked on some pretty great projects with strong leads and supervisors who I learned a lot from. -an incredible pipeline. Katana and renderman are easy to work with and learn. -people are given senior level shots early in their career which is a great opportunity and can lead to a strong reel very quickly. It also allows people to really stand out early on. -the usual answer: beer friday, monthlies, lots of free snacks and pop.

Cons

I personally had a great experience working at MPC but it started to fall apart a bit toward the end of my stay there. The amount of academies they were having put a bit of strain on the mids/seniors on the floor. There were so many juniors to hand hold that it became difficult to work on shots. A lot of our shots had to be given away because we didnt have time with the other responsibilities given to us (setups, trouble shooting, etc). Even though many of us were given extra responsibility, we were not compensated for it. As a sequence lead, I made junior level pay (comparing to other studios). While worth it for experience, definitely not worth it long term. Artists are also kept in the dark about any upcoming shows (guaranteed or in bid), what they're slated to be on, as well as general company changes until its too late.

Pros

Artists and colleges are incredibly talented and fantastic people.

Cons

Poorly managed, too many politics. Producers are bullies. They like to install fear, and overwork the artists without proper scheduling. They hire juniors to save up on money and make them do senior work resulting in horrible quality. Forget about having a life.
