Pros

Talented and creative coworkers. World class education focusing on problem solving skills and technical understanding. Great student culture (undergraduate). Tremendous opportunities that are easy to take advantage of, due to the huge and easily reachable pool of brilliant thinkers and world-class researchers (simple enough to schedule an appointment with a professor and discuss your idea). Great opportunity to network for the same reason.

Cons

Recent events resulting from the recession have shown the disconnect between the administration and the students/research community. Your experience depends a lot on the characteristics of the group you work with. I've worked with professors who are very quick in giving very strong feedback on how you are doing or can improve, and also with professors who don't communicate at all and get upset afterwards when I didn't do what they wanted. Compared to the cost of living in Boston, graduate RA stipends are a joke.

Pros

name recognition, location (compared to many other big name engineering schools)

Cons

pay less than most other top programs because MIT thinks it's the best, and therefore people would forgo compensation to come here.

Pros

As a graduate student: - Resources are plentiful. IT, facilities, libraries and the rest have most of everything one could need. Shared instrumentation facilities are of high quality. - Size. The large size and variety of the work happening at MIT means that there are knowledgeable people in almost any relevant area that you can seek advice from. - Nerdy atmosphere and great variety in people. It is difficult to feel left out. - Nice campus and excellent recreational facilities

Cons

- Chief potential downside: Principal Investigators can be "hands-off" to the point that it is possible to get stuck in difficult / vague projects for extended periods of time. It is essential that you take initiative and exit or enter projects depending on your own judgement. - In some groups advisers can be ambitious in a way that translates into significant pressure on graduate students to put in lab-hours or achieve results. This depends from group to group.
