Pros

It has awesome name recognition. Just saying that you work for MIT makes people look at you differently. As a grad student, your schedule is also very flexible (for the most part).

Cons

It really depends on your adviser. Some advisers are really demanding and others aren't. Some look over your shoulder about everything and want to show you how to do every step. Others want to see you once a month and that's it. There are also those in between. Each style can be good if that is the way you work best. Choose wisely. It can mean the difference between bliss and misery.

Pros

Broad, deep, and dynamic intellectual atmosphere.

Cons

Salary-to-cost-of-living ratio is much lower than at many competing schools due to Cambridge's high cost of living. Hard to stand out because everyone around you is so awesome.
