Pros

Good experience. Really can get hands on experience working on cool projects that you are passionate about. In some cases it leads to papers or great relationships with mentors.

Cons

can be somewhat tedious work. If you don't love research it definitely gets repetitive and such after a while. Sometimes you can have harsh supervisors who are unreasonable.
