Pros

The people here are great to work with, and the environment is stimulating. There is always a great variety of interesting events going on around campus if you look for them.

Cons

If you're a postdoctoral fellow with your own fellowship funding, you don't get the same benefits as postdoctoral affiliates, who count as employees. Fellows only count as "affiliate" status, which means they end up paying much more for health insurance, the campus gym, and so on. It's unfortunate, and doesn't seem to me to make much sense.

Pros

Intellectually, the work at MIT and collaborative institutes such as the Broad or MGH are unparalleled. The science that occurs at MIT is sci-fi come to life and the professors have some of the most innovative, out-of-the-box approaches I've ever encountered.

Cons

The culture of MIT is extremely high stress and work-a-holism. While the peer competitiveness is much lower than you would expect at an institution of this caliber, there is great potential to feel depressed and socially isolated.
