Poor management with lack of industry or research knowledge

Pros

Happy hour occasionally at work

Cons

Manager had no knowledge of the disease areas studied, had poor to terrible management skills, unaware of appropriate research methodologies, and was not removed from the team despite multiple (5+) employees she "managed" quitting (most of whom cited her poor knowledge and leadership as the primary reason for leaving). Company is focused on admin work and charging a premium price due to 'brand" rather than mentoring, training, developing employees and providing truly innovative solutions to client business issues. Quit within a few months

Pros

If you're straight out of college, you can learn a thing or two about Powerpoint and Excel. Working at MaPS will also give entry level employees a better idea of what they want from an employer and what they want from a career. Plus, there are a lot of young people working here, so you may meet some interesting co-workers.

Cons

MaPS has some of the highest turnover of any company I have seen. Hours are long, the work is awfully tedious, and management tends to be opaque and generally not very much fun to be around. Expect to be in the office for 70% of your waking life and expect to see your friends from the office either quit or get laid off.

Where careers go to stagnate

Pros

Generous time off benefits; flexibility around setting my schedule and where I work (within reason). Frankly, these are the ONLY reasons I've stayed as long as I have.

Cons

Frequent reorgs and layoffs as management chases elusive growth, without clear strategy. Back-end functions (operations, IT, panel management) are not held accountable for numerous and often client-visible quality issues, resulting in client service team spending considerable time cleaning up messes and creating intense workload. Many barriers to career growth and promotion. Management says they are committed to promoting from within, but turn around and bring in outsiders for VP roles. When there are promotions, they go to younger team members. Once you pass 40, expect to be stuck in your current position indefinitely. No raises in 2 1/2 years; bonuses are slim if they happen at all.
