Pros

Colleagues and students are lovely. Some of the academic and admin staff are also nice.

Cons

Well, where to begin. IH Bratislava is a farce of a school to work for. Exploitation is what they thrive at. Do you like your employer to treat you like a valued asset and a human being? Well, don't work for IH Bratislava unless you're into heavy sadomasochism. You will be exploited and treated like a borstal inmate. You're just a number, you are worthless, you are nothing. The staff turnover is very high. That speaks volumes. One of the biggest problems is that you end up wasting hours of your time travelling on public transport travelling to company classes, schools and back. You won't be reimbursed for travel. 90% of the classes are off site and sometimes you travel for over an hour each way only to be paid for an hours teaching. In theory you are freelance but you have no freedom as IH Bratislava will cancel your classes and reorganise your schedule without consulting you in advance. You aren't supported, you are just a number. If you wish to leave you need to give three months notice. If you don't respect the notice you will have to pay an extortionate penalty fee. In the interview process they lie about the amount of travelling time, the companies you will be working for and they forget to mention significant expenses you have to cover for moving to and living in Slovakia. IH Bratislava also try to extort as much money as possible from you since they rent out apartments to teachers and include hidden fees which they don't tell you about. To summarise, if you value your mental health and sanity, don't work for IH Bratislava. If you do, good luck trying to leave as they make the process extremely difficult and costly for you.

International House Response

Dear former IH Bratislava colleague, We are sorry to hear that you had a negative experience working with our organization. It was never our intention to make you feel as if you were being exploited. It is important for us that our teachers are supported by our school, and we do our best to resolve any issues they have. In our defense, however, there are many inaccurate and incorrect statements in your review about IH Bratislava. You do not give enough consideration for what the management team does to help improve the teachers’ working lives either. If anyone who is considering working at IH Bratislava and is concerned about our organization after having read our former colleague’s review, I would kindly ask this person to verify with us the assertions made. This will help him or her to get a broader understanding of how our organization operates. Regards, The IH Bratislava team
