Leadership cares about their staff
Pros
ICFJ has a culture that cares deeply about people. Leadership is open to feedback, including constructive criticism on what needs to be improved, and in the past few years they have been implementing improvements based on feedback, including on the salary front for more junior staff. Importantly, they will not layoff people during bad economic times with a tradition focused on keeping everyone in their jobs even when the economy is bad. They have very good benefits, including flex-work post-COVID. Also the work there is interesting: you're working with international journalists and travel opportunities are many for program implementers in particular - to conferences and abroad to other countries! Travel is a pretty sweet perk. In terms of management, this organization has exceptional people-focused leadership which is rarely found in other organizations and a culture that fosters mutual respect and high levels of collaboration. They call themselves the "ICFJ Family" which is a reflection of how they treat colleagues: like family. Management is willing to support staff, hear out challenges and provide mentorship when requested. This is a great place to foster a junior manager into a higher level management position as opportunities to learn from the leadership team are many and they have great people at the helm of the ship, some of whom have been with the organization for more than twenty years (who had started off as interns!) which is unheard of at most non-profits.
Cons
There has been turnover with junior staff in the past few years due to low salary but management has moved to fixing that and finding other ways to retain junior staff for the long-term.
