Pros

Happy hours are a nice touch, casual clothing and the proximity to downtown Stamford is great. You really never meet with clients face to face so you can literally roll out of bed and walk into work.

Cons

As a sales person it is extremely hard to do your job without an appropriate lead generation system in place. Your measured on whether you can make 60 dials in a day, rather than the actual content of your work. Since Indeed works with no contracts; there are accounts that spent with me for months that I was never paid commissions on because the client decided not to pay their bill - so I got burnt despite closing and nurturing these deal(s) for several months. 80% of the directors have egos the size of Texas and will remind you of this every-day/minute/second of the day while micromanaging everything you do. If you show up to work a minute late be prepared to be repremanded and scolded about it. I once tried to leave at 5:59 (one minute early) and my director coldly stared at me and said where are you going? I replied; going home and he told me the day doesn't end till 6:00 and proceeded to tell the rest of my team that he just "big timed" me, while laughing. It is also customary for directors to call out specific teammates in front of the entire team; this is there way to "motivate" us. I also witnessed a director pulling up a former employees picture on LinkedIn and proceed to belittle and make fun of this person because of what he looked like; he also made sure to call the entire team over so they could laugh as well, even though most of them looked visible uncomfortable with the situation. There is ZERO HR presence whatsoever, you can get away with everything and anything. There are nasty rumors spread about people everyday. And a lot of the AE's will drink at the local bars during lunchtime and I'm not talking about one beer; but rather more like 3-shots of whiskey and 2-vodka seltzers, then proceed to go back to work without anyone questioning them. This may sound extreme, but it is very much the truth. The CRM is horrible and malfunctions at least 4-5 times a day, the phone systems are equally as horrible - when they would make us go on 1-hour company wide call blocks it would take 5-7 times calling a particular number in order for that call to go through because Indeed's current bandwidth cannot support so many calls at one time; thus really taking away from the call block. ZERO diversity in this company, if you are over 24-years old, your viewed as "old", I see women constantly getting sexually harassed as well and in front of their directors. Why do you think Indeed has such a large hiring initiative now? Because for as big as they are growing; they are still losing a lot of talented people who are leaving for better and more professional jobs since there is nothing in terms of career paths - they promote you to "Senior" AE, but your still performing the same job functions as you would as an AE.

Pros

* Indeed's branding is on point. * The open PTO as well as the free food and booze are pretty great for a millennial just getting started in the professional workforce! They have over-hired over the last couple years so, especially in Search Quality, so take all the PTO you want! * Lots of people of similar age means nothing compares to the social setting--you'll have no problem making friends with your coworkers and they're a really open atmosphere. * They also have a really heavy corporate emphasis on diversity, with countless affinity groups you're bound to feel included somewhere.

Cons

Some 'abridged' words of caution for anyone considering a job in Search Quality at Indeed Note that I cannot attest to any other department's experience. *BEWARE for those who just want any job at Indeed:* Search Quality as a department is oft considered the 'awkward stepchild' of Indeed, something nobody will admit to in the hiring process. If you are looking for a shoe-in at a growing company and plan to eventually transfer departments, I pray you think again. There is no horizontal mobility unless you want to go to QA (for the same sub-organization) or coast until your next outside opportunity arises. Oftentimes other departments will ignore an internal applications simply based on their team of origin. Even then, it is up to the manager's discretion and not truly weighted on one's technical ability, subject matter expertise, or any equitable merit. Some general takeaways from the experience: * Hiring process/Promotions: They both tended to be quite nepotistic. Friends will be promoted while hard workers simply keep doing just that--working hard. * Personal career development: You will not have any opportunity to grow outside of the canned "Analyst > Senior Analyst > Team Lead" path. Total absence of guidelines for internal mobility around the Indeed corporate structure. Self-education is encouraged outside of work only and the internal learning seminars are nothing more than a bunch of engineers/devs showing off some cool things they made that will most likely never be introduced in the actual live site. * Overall professionalism/job specs: There isn't any formal discipline that 'search quality' can fall under, so the backgrounds in this department range from Art History to Zoology. While that isn't in itself a con, barely anyone has any technical knowhow coming in, despite asking for "Python skillz" on all the job adverts. This leads to managers being overly selective in the hiring process, with hopes that someone will help. Meanwhile, analysts drone on day in and day out on highly repetitive tasks that would frankly be more suited for outsourcing. * Social environment: While the majority of the coworkers you will get along with, a small fraction of hypersensitive employees will not let you forget that you are in the moral minority if you don't think like them. These individuals turn the workplace into an cautious, queasy environment where even the slightest annoyance could land you an HR complaint. Managers tend to sidestep the problem with fear of more HR complaints, this is a negative feedback loop. Seemingly weekly themed happy hours are cool though... * Management style: Laissez faire management is a tech industry mantra it seems, it works GREAT when your team is inspired by what they do. In reality managers at Indeed have no real top-level direction and typically just take the first idea that gets bubbled up from below. 'Metrics' and 'statistics' are dirty, dirty words around these here parts. * Last but not least--Salary: Well below average for the Austin area, as well as the tech industry in general. They'll try to doll it up like "But we have open PTO! and food! and even kegs!"--these things do nothing to detract from the lack of direction and personal growth you will experience taking a job here. The bonus schemes are cryptic and pretty much just rely on how well your team lead likes you any given quarter. All Indeed truly has going for them is branding.

Indeed Response

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave us a review about working at Indeed in Austin. We’re really proud to offer our Indeedians a number of great perks and benefits in all of our offices like open PTO and free food and snacks. As we continue to grow and evolve as a company, we want our employees to have opportunities to do the same. There are endless ways for Indeedians to gain different experiences and take on new challenges within roles, within teams, and within the company. Internal mobility is something we’re really passionate about and we want all of our employees next role to be with Indeed. As a business we review salaries yearly as part of the merit process and have a dedicated benefits team that are continually adjusting levels based on data and feedback. We launched a global salary project across the business last year to look at our salary ranges across all roles. We’ll now start to be transparent internally and externally as a business on the salaries we offer. We are listening and acting on all the feedback we receive across our external and internal feedback channels, so we appreciate the time you have taken to give us this. We appreciate all your feedback.

Pros

Unlimited PTOs Data-driven culture Ability to drive initiatives and iterations

Cons

- Politics is seeping into the engineering culture. Your fate and growth depend on your manager and how much they know how to play it. If you don't have an idea how things work here(being an engineer), you will be manipulated until you know what the right expectations are. - You won't be rewarded what you deserve in a direct manner. Instead, the management will torture you to yield your fullest so that you think that you really achieved it and the bar is high which in reality was not. - Engineering bar is getting lower.
