Pros

Work at home, competitive pay and benefits if you are a decent performer.

Cons

Job security not dependent on performance. Critical loss and degradation in skills and experience of technical staff due to offshoring, resulting in impacts to the business. Too many layers of managers and project managers; majority are non-technical paper pushers and bean counters who do not understand the technical aspects of areas they manage. This lack of understanding impacts their ability to manage effectively and make sound decisions for long-term success of the business.

Pros

Education oportunities, though not at every corner, are there - you just need to be willing to learn the skills that are "hot." Also, your career at IBM is in your hands; it's what you make of it. If you want to be mediocre, that's your choice, but you don't have to be. It's all about what you put into it. Pay varies - it is all about what you make of yourself.

Cons

Travel, but that's consulting, not IBM. The way in which promotions, etc. are handled is unusual - but it keeps it as consistent as possible across a company of nearly 400k people.

Pros

The support that is available when working. The company is global but the ability to collaborate with fellow employees around the world is so simple the world seems that much smaller. There are plenty of opportunities to find your niche and grow. Learning opportunities are all around. Overall compensation can give a great quality of life.

Cons

The over emphasis on objective quantifiable measurement rather over subjective observation of ability and performance given the environment of opportunity or lack thereof. The bottom line can receive too much emphasis and confuse the employees when contrasted with announcements of record numbers and billions in profit.
