Pros

IBM has great health benefits for the employee and his family. We have been very happy with our insurance. Flexible Hours- IBM allows employees to set their own hours when it does not affect their work. This can be an advantage when trying to spend time with family or a disadvantage when you have to work around others flexible schedules. IBM allows employees in some jobs to work from home. I have worked from home for a few years now and I like that I do not have a commute and that I get to see my family throughout the day during my breaks.

Cons

IBM has an overloaded workforce. As a company they are downsizing their headcount while still attempting to do the same amount or more. Workers are overworked and put in more hours than should be expected. My position had limited advancement opportunities. In technical fields it is hard to move up past a certain point without leaving the technical side and going into management.

Pros

Stable - fits the "just do my job" kind of person. Great access to self-study resources, if you find the time. I miss my ThinkPad. I miss Sametime. It's a great tool to connect with any subject matter expert in the organisation. And they're usually quite friendly.

Cons

Stable - don't rock the boat culture. IBM brags of innovation and all but the culture doesn't reflect it. Many good ideas never saw the light-of-day. Malaysia was (is??) seen as a low-cost and hence, unfairly, low-skilled location. Great developers never got the recognition they deserved and have since left. I myself have been passed over for a Bravo award just because of the numbers game. Some managers need to get past their obsession with the hierarchical organisation.

Pros

The pay is good, and you get to work with people around the world as well as a bunch of hillbillies in North Carolina. IBM is customer focused.

Cons

The review system does NOT promote teamwork. It is cut-throat. Also, IBM never does anything new or creative. You use old tools to work on last years technology. IBM buys new companies, it doesn't invent or create anything. Its heyday is long behind us. This is sad. Also, the stress level is unbelievable. I've seen people crying at their desks far too many times.
