Redundancy procedure

Pros

Learn all the tricks of operating a multi-regional / global organization.

Cons

The redundancy procedure was as un-humane as one can imagine. With decades of service in the organization and plausible appraisals, there has been no discussion whatsoever. A lot of unconfirmed news hanging around, and on one morning, login to company intranet blocked, called by manager into a meeting room, handed the redundancy letter, access card confiscated, had 5 minutes to pack belongings and escorted down the main gate, never to be allowed entry again It was as if I committed serious breach that required disciplinary action! And never a chance to say farewell or celebrate the decades of efforts there. What a humiliating experience, especially to end the decades long of service!

Business Outlook

Pros

Decent pay and vacation time, health benefits are decent, encourage working at home which saves money on commuting, thats all

Cons

Unorganized, reactive, cares more about location of employee than skills & experience of employee, promotions are few and far between, constantly outsourcing to unqualifed India employees, lack of communication across departments, lots of known inconsistencies

Pros

Great opportunities to learn, grow and progress. There is generally support to broaden your career and expand international experience -- but it takes a lot of hard work and sacrifice to realise it. When HSBC finally decides to do something, they do it.

Cons

There's a strong "we do it ourself" culture at HSBC. This is sometimes positive, but often turns projects into expensive elongated affairs that seldom come to conclusion when they need to. There is a significant tension in the corporate ranks between "global" and "local", and a less tense but ever-present UK/Hong Kong leadership tension. It it's a bureaucratic place, steeped in traditions, held back but the scar tissue of multiple acquisitions and divestments. Insiders often suggest hay HSBC means How Simple Became Complicated.
