Pros

Cool products, interesting technology. Great opportunities if you are in the H1B visa program from India or China. Flexible work times (you can work any 12 hours of the day you want). Lots of overtime available (unpaid). Lots of free lunches because you will be expected work through your normal lunch.

Cons

No work/life balance. Worst vacation policy in SE Michigan (you get your 4th week after 15 years of service). Constant fire fighting and new management team has no idea how to bring this under control. People are pretty disappointed in the current direction of the company and the company prospects. A few years ago, in a surprise move to most people, they laid off 50% of the audio group to send those jobs to India and China. Lots of customer dissatisfaction due to OEM yard holds. Management team works so many hours (including lots of weekend meetings) that they don't know how to appreciate your extra efforts.

Pros

1. Getting to work on Infotainment systems, which is the most versatile systems in the vehicle. 2. Challenging work and potential to move if you are ever recognized for your work value. Which can be difficult depending on if you have the right boss (one with a backbone) and if it is the right phase of the moon for Harman.

Cons

1. Quality is not controlled and/or communicated properly. 2. Software and hardware do not work collaboratively. 3. When there is a problem, people there throw it over to wall to the next person. 4. New technology/ideas are not really welcome or appreciation 5. No management appreciation or recognition. 6. No bonus offered to employees even though the CEO is one of the highest paid 7. No appreciation for products. The CEO only shows his face when absolutely necessary, even when there is a product/contract rolling out that is well over $1 billion in revenue...come on be a leader! 8. No employee value, even when you step outside of your job in a daily basis that is still not enough for any type of recognition. At least with the boss I had. 9. Not staying ahead of the customer and competition, Harman is 2 to 3 steps behind. Just playing catch up when a product is in the quoting phases. 10. One of the most stressful jobs you will most likely have. Along with pay that is not comparable to other companies in the market.

Pros

In 2009/2010 I would have give Harman 4 or 5 stars. The company *was* good to work for before Sidney Harman died - plenty on training and encouragement, quality & performance of the products was paramount. Unfortunately this very quickly disappeared once the company's founder passed away, and the current CEO was give free reign.

Cons

Upper management - especially the uppermost management. The CEO's knee jerk reaction to a profits warning in late 2012 resulted in the majority of R&D talent of the organisation being stripped away to "save cost" and artificially increase profits. European Engineers and technicians with decades of experience were turfed out, with the master-plan of replacing them with inexperienced Chinese engineers This will enable a temporary increase in dividends for the shareholders over the next couple of years - this apparent turnaround is, of course, being spun as the genius of the CEO - NOT SO! My prediction is that the CEO will be surreptitiously selling off his shares over the next 18 months or so - capitalizing on the artificial inflation of the share price, before the removal of the organizations life blood starts to tell.
