Pros

Some of the best actuarial compensation I’ve heard about in Toronto anecdotally, and they have a particularly strong exam program with significant salary increases and bonuses per exam passed. Coworkers on the actuarial team and more broadly in the rest of the office are smart, helpful, and fun. There’s somehow always a fun industry or client event going on as well. The work itself is very engaging and high level. Compared to my work at multiple primary insurance companies, the work I’m doing at GC is being seen and used by individuals and teams at a much higher level than I ever have produced work for before (for example, often the work I’m presenting is to multiple C-suite executives from a given client).

Cons

The busy season from mid-September to mid-December comes with expectations of uncompensated overtime work and you also can’t really take any PTO in those months. While this generally is made up for by much reduced workloads the rest of the year, the off-season work has been picking up a bit recently.

Too Much Work To Function

Pros

Job security. Reinsurance is niche. Learned a lot since I've been here

Cons

Too much work. You do everything for the clients and it's just not manageable. Treaties renew, set them up, report / update losses, LOCs, audits, premium, collections. If you have high volume accounts like I do, you are stressed and just dreading when work starts. Claim system is terrible ie: can't calculate claims right, can't handle clash claims, can't do reinstatements right. The claims system message board is the worst I have ever seen in a company. If you do a little mistake in there, it throws the claim notices off and then you get blamed for it by the people who run it. As I mentioned, you learn a lot because you are thrown into it. They can't find people to hire. Company is not worth the stress nor the money
