Pros

Opportunities to grow in trending tech fields, great benefits, a consistent 9-5 schedule, opportunities for college-tuition assistance.

Cons

A lack of resources and budget. I was hired on for communications but ended up split time doing web development (something I had no formal training in) that consumed a substantial amount of time. I was given the same promise and recommendation for a promotion - the only way to earn a salary change - every quarter for 3 years in a row. Finally, I called a meeting with HR during which HR did not properly review my file, and upon discussion said a VERY sexist remark, and said that no promises are ever made for promotions. I submitted my two weeks later that week. Watch out for this boys club masquerading as a progressive institution.

Pros

There are some very intelligent colleagues working on interesting research. The students work hard.

Cons

The institute refuses to implement basic safety measures to protect it's students and employees from COVID-19. Faculty and staff requests to require masking indoors and allow for flexibility in class delivery have been meet with threats of termination by the upper administration. This is the most toxic place I have worked so far (more toxic than a factory I worked in amidst heavy layoffs). Communication between departments is almost non-existent, and when it occurs is usually hostile. Financial policies intended to save money end up wasting money and slow basic day to day functioning. Respect for time is non-existent, it is common to work 80-90 hour weeks when only getting paid for 30-40 hours. Emails and phone calls well past working hours and on weekends are common. If OSHA had any jurisdiction here, they would have a field day. Due to Georgia's laws around public employees, there is no collective bargaining agreement, and hence little to no chance of changing things here.

Pros

I had some flexibility, but that depends on the department and supervisor.

Cons

Low wages. Cheap or outdated software systems. No room for growth depending on your job title.
