Georgia Tech is a very open and free university in which to conduct research.
Pros
The research opportunities are fantastic at Georgia Tech. The strong interaction with industry and focus on near term applications greatly helps in securing a position after graduation. A broad spectrum of students and professors enables highly creative collaboration. No professor is unapproachable, and any will gladly setup a meeting at your request, with many holding an open door policy. You will never be marginalized, as the faculty realize that much (if not all) of the research work is done by the students. Overall, the atmosphere is one of openness and freedom that allows most students to thrive and produce their best work.
Cons
The research assistanceship is not the highest offered nation wide, but is certainly generous enough to provide for the cost of living in Atlanta.
