      GM was a great place to work with endless oppurtunities, but the era has come to an end

      Pros

      There is a vast area of groups to work in at GM, from purchasing to engineering to R&D. It can be difficult switch from one department to another, but with persistence the change can be made. I currently work in the hybrid group and the work is very challenging and intriguing, it is definitely a good area to be in at GM (or any auto company).

      Cons

      No raises, increasing costs of healthcare, no bonuses, ingrained management behavior, global engineering is shifting work overseas.

      Pros

      There are still some good opportunities at General Motors if you are involved in Battery technology since GM is playing catchup on hybrids. Compensation seems to be reasonable and GM still offers very good benefits.

      Cons

      Very process oriented with a new flavor of the month for ways to improve (but they never eliminate last months flavor - they just keep adding). Very low morale currently with more and more job opportunities leaving the United States and moving to lower cost countries. Rationale for promotions does not seem to follow any logical sense. No consistency in the way people are treated and a lack of communication on the what is expected and required.
