      Pros

      GE is a fairly stable company. It's not immune to downturns, but it is mostly stable. Additionally, since there are so many different businesses within GE, and so many different sites, its fairly easy to move around. Salary pay is alright, and they still do pay for some overtime (up to 55 hours, the first 5 over 40 is unpaid).

      Cons

      - Continual re-organization of each division. - Program management continually promises things to customers before even checking if engineering has the bandwidth to do the additional work. - All training is management focused. There is very little technical training. - Their IT department is one of the most disorganized and inefficient organizations I've ever seen. - Most of the tools are old, not well suited for modern development practices like Agile, Continuous Integration, etc. - Heath benefits are not great. - Your skillset will get stale, there isn't much room for adding in new technologies (web, mobile, etc.)

      The ultimate rat race

      Pros

      Many of the engineers are good and competent. Most managers are flexible on you work schedule.

      Cons

      The pay is substandard, the work is amazingly boring and repetitive. On top of that all the project are very poor managed resulting in major schedule and cost over runs, all later blamed on engineering. Don't ever expect to be rewarded for your work either. Every raise is just cost of living unless you are willing to play the corp rat race game. The constant re-orgs are also demoralizing, over 7 in the last 5 years.
