Pros

Cultural engagement and provided continuing professional development for TEFL through montly workshops. The structure of the ETA program provides time outside of school to engage with your local community.

Cons

Communication issues between site coordinator and Taipei office. Also some communication issues between the local government (education bureau) and Fulbright office which caused problems with what each school expected of the teachers and what Fulbright expected.

Pros

Personal and professional growth, a wealth of support, pushes you outside your comfort zone, language development

Cons

Your school can be a little difficult to get adjusted to at times, and you will find foreigners aren't always as punctual or motivated as many Americans have come to expect in an employer

Pros

Cultural exchange, excellent professional development, freedom to study what is your passion and develop project ideas. The other Fulbrighters are all passionate people and we all collaborate together on projects that interest us.

Cons

Sometimes events are a bit disorganized. One grant payment was late, but the fellowship sum is very generous for the country so it wasn't a problem. Many ETAs have around 300 students, but we only teach around 12 hours a week. This makes it hard to get to know our students.
