Pros

+Financial stability of company +Good culture of working together +Industry leader in technology +Strong safety culture

Cons

ExxonMobil's entire corporate culture is a function of its ranking system. In a nutshell everyone in an range of jobs is force-ranked. So you are either listed as the #1 employee, the #27 or the #100 or anywhere in between. In theory it is an objective way to move the best people to the top and show the worst people the door. It's extremely political and is more of a popularity contest for everyone except maybe your own manager. What is messed up is that if you are not in the top 10% then Exxon basically treats you like your career is completely worthless and you are lucky just to be there. I have worked at Exxon for about 10 years, I have ONLY been in the top 1/3 and was basically told "we're moving you to a job that you don't want and won't be good at, but we don't really care about you. Someone else needs to check a box and you are in the job that they need to check it." Unfortunately, the whole system is run by the people that did well in it, so as far as they know the system works well. It promotes people that think, act and talk like them. They keep getting more and more money and better and more interesting jobs. As far as they're concerned all the other people in the company should count themselves lucky just to have jobs.

Pros

Exxon provides a very disciplined approach to managing corporate direction and thus is relatively stable. In general, the pension and 401k are hard to beat benefits. You have an opportunity to work on some of the largest projects in the world.

Cons

Exxon is NOT an innovator, and requires it's engineers be bureaucrats rather than solve problems. Work and culture are abysmal environments, based on fear and punishment. Security and controls drive every aspect of daily business, and money is wasted for this purpose. It's approach to diversity and inclusion is an embarrassment. ExxonMobil does not branch out in the way it approaches today's energy challenges -- the only card they are willing to play is oil. No investigation in solar, wind, biofuels, etc.

Pros

• Great salary • Innovative ideas and solutions are highly valued • Clean • Safe • Modern • Spring, TX campus is beautiful • Active in community volunteering • This is an environment that values coming in early and leaving late with "butts in seats", not working from home.

Cons

• "Rank and Yank" for ranking system is poor and causes distrust and lack of beneficial information sharing between employees. • Annual eval doesn't mean anything. The discussions behind closed doors are where the managers put their employees in different buckets. If you have a manager that lives and works in a different country, they don't get the chance to properly evaluate you as they do the people that work in their own respective offices. • If there is a behavior issue with an employee, it is overlooked if they do their job well. If you try to discuss said behavior issue with your manager about an employee, it isn't taken seriously (unless it is sexual harassment or diversity and inclusion...) and then you will be labeled as a problem for bringing it up. • Not good compensation for working overtime or on holidays • Not good work life balance • Get EVERYTHING in writing regarding job performance and expectations, whether it's positive or negative, You can have a manager tell you how wonderful you are doing, but can still end with a poor ranking experience if you don't have anything in writing. **THE RANKING SYSTEM NEEDS TO GO. IT IS NOT OBJECTIVE, BUT VERY SUBJECTIVE. **
