Pros

The atmosphere is very supportive, colleagues are always happy to help. It also depends on your supervisor - I had two, one was micromanaging, another was supportive and employee oriented. Exxon cares a lot about ergo safety - you can get special mouse, foot rest, different equipment for it. Standard benefit package.

Cons

Top management doesn’t want to hear employees’ complains. Salaries compared to other companies are lower, however the workload is quite intense. Office attendance is not voluntary, it’s kind of mandatory. They “expect” you to come. There are no sick days. If you feel sick for a day - you should take vacation that day, or open a sick leave (but it can’t last for a day only). You can not take vacation until you find a person who will back you up (it’s not done by supervisors). Technical assets require upgrades - old headphones, mouses, keyboard. Bureaucracy all over the company. Old strict rules which sometimes doesn’t give any sense to anyone - but rules are rules right? Nobody cares if it’s a waste of time…

Pros

Salary was great! It was the highest offer I got. Training was top notch. I was groomed to be a senior technical in a refining technology. The brand is respected on a resume. Also, you work with some of the sharpest people in the game. Very structured training, practices and procedures.

Cons

If you’re a contact your will work long hours and be stressed. Cold and impersonal environment. The ranking system still exists but it is called assessment groups or something now, same forces ranking. You will be ranked amongst your peers so the environment is sort of a pressure cooker at all times. You do not control your career. You go where you are needed. When things are bad, the bottom 10% gets laid off. Anyone can be in the bottom 10% regardless of your performance, it is a combination of luck, experience, who likes you, your group, what good project falls on your lap, etc. if you are less than 5 years, and you’re in the bottom 20%, then you’re out.
