Pros

It has paid for accomodation, no having to find your own unless you want to take that step. A competitve salary coupled with a low cost of living. A comprehensive training package called NADP, operated by all English First schools. A good first step as a TESL teacher, you can move on to other EF schools throughout China, Russia and Indonesia once you've completed your contract and no problems with visas or salary being paid.

Cons

It is a job and not a vacation with teaching, unfortunately that was how it was sold for a long time. If you're coming into this as a first job it can be a little daunting if you're not used to work.

Pros

I have never been paid late at my current school. Fun yet professional atmosphere where you are challenged to deliver great lessons. Good camaraderie among the international and Chinese staff at the school. Consistent timetables so you have a good idea what to expect every week.

Cons

Summer periods are challenging as you teach extra hours during the Chinese summer holidays but the more experienced teachers will try and help you plan and prepare lessons. Salary is fine, but could be higher (same in any job I guess).

Pros

I've been working for EF English First in Urumqi for nearly three years. I took the opportunity to work in China and was quite open to any placement, Urumqi found me more than I found it. The last three years have been fantastic and after traveling throughout China over the last few years I can honestly say this is one of the most unique and fascinating places in China. EF have supported me throughout and there have been excellent opportunities for professional development and promotion, I've developed as a teacher and also as a manager during my time here. The accommodation, salary package and support provided by the company are very good and I feel like I've always had someone to go to if I've had a problem or needed help with something.

Cons

*Culturally Xinjiang/Urumqi is really different from the rest of China, read up before you come, you won't find a McDonalds or much in the way of Western comforts! *The weather is extreme, really hot in the Summer and super cold in the winter- I suggest you make the most of it by hiking and snowboarding at any chance!
