Pros

Get to work in multiple locations abroad.

Cons

They lie about paying you back for flights (I was told this would happen as soon as I arrived but it actually comes in monthly installments). Seriously overworked and underpaid. They claim to offer language lessons, but with the great firewall of China none of us can access online lessons - pointless. Don't offer any help/guidance after first week. Upper management typically don't speak English at all, so if you have a problem with your boss there are very few solutions. Racism is a problem within China and although I never encountered this I was told it happened to other people within other EF offices.

Thank-you for your post. We are sorry to hear that you are unable to take advantage of our online Chinese language lessons. We did some initial testing from Beijing this morning and didn’t experience any problems using a PC or Mobile. We did, however, experience some delays accessing the online classroom. We have escalated this issue to IT, for more expertise testing and they will follow up with the IT team in Beijing to further test any potential firewall issues. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention and we apologize for the inconvenience. It would be great if you can reach out to me personally so we can further investigate this issue. In terms of your flight reimbursement, please reach out to me as well at Mario.Bermeo@ef.com so I can collect the needed information to look into this matter.

Pros

Visa service is good, the job is easy, and the workplace is very social.

Cons

The pay is low, the holidays are minimal, the benefits are non-existent, and the way they treat employees is gross. The schedule is also terrible, working on weekends sucks.

Pros

Always paid on time Visa’s for arrival sorted well There is a career path within the company for many disciplines (beyond teaching) Some teachers I know at other centres genuinely have had very good experiences (hence why this is 2 stars not one)

Cons

Every centre is different- some will work an hour less a day but still get paid more Weekend and evening work- working the end of the metro line didn’t help this at all. May be better to see attractions on your day off but May colleagues weekends are staggered. Culture- all about sales- unhappy teachers seen easier to replace with fresh foreigners rather than entice them to stay Pay- terrible compared to many schools. Even the advertised amount is rarely shown due to a ridiculous (and poorly explained) tax system- this changed halfway though my time there. Plus you are constantly paying a loan back you are told you can’t get by without Summer and winter course- work twice as many hours for only a 300rmb weekly bonus (roughly £30) Sick leave- you need a hospital note to get 60% of your wage back- if you don’t then you lose a day’s wage. Annual leave- only 10 days and then only very little for chinese public holidays/ Christmas. Management- so badly organised at my centre. Management didn’t understand simple things like exit procedure and even had one of our teachers classified two ‘bands’ lower than they should have (a serious pay difference!) We had serious issues with racial and sexual bias. These issues were addressed in a team meeting but it felt like they were simply squashed and brushed under the carpet! Very little appeared to change as sales were more important to the centre than inclusion.

Thank you for your post, and we appreciate your candid feedback. Also, thank you for acknowledging our Career Path and the positive experiences that many teachers have with EF. We do offer loans to teachers to help them with the cost of relocation, and we are sorry to hear that this benefit was a cause of stress for you. Exit and other government regulated procedures can be complicated to understand in China, and we agree that better training of management in this area is needed. EF is an equal opportunity employer, and we take any cases of alleged discrimination very seriously. If you feel that a racial or sexual bias issue occurred at your center, and was not properly addressed, please reach out to us at compliance.china@ef.com so that a fair and thorough investigation into the matter can take place.
