You’re just a very unimportant number on a list to management - if you can’t work your shift, you’ll suffer the consequences, personal circumstances mean nothing & in my own experience, even being informed by the hospital that you’re having an ectopic pregnancy & being in and out of hospital isn’t a good enough excuse to miss stocktake! Upper management don’t care to support the little guy, they are more than happy to say goodbye to a ‘replaceable’ member of staff.
