Pros

Weekends off if none of your team phone in sick and if you have enough staff to run the building/rota Stable salary

Cons

My individual experience in my area but really tough to have work life balance. I haven’t seen this written about a lot in previous reviews but it should be made much more clear in interviews that management at PG (both AGMs and GMs) is a job where you are on call literally 24/7 despite the pay difference. You may be called into the gym at unsociable hours as early as 1am, 3am etc. and you will not be paid for the extra hours. You may be encouraged to ‘take the time back’ but this is the only business I know which doesn’t pay a call out fee and it is near impossible to take your time back due to low staffing. If you don’t answer your work phone your personal phone will be contacted on weekends etc. You will have staff members also contacting you outside of your working hours even when you put boundaries in place. The 24/7 aspect is a massive part of the business I feel is missed in the job description. You will also do a night audit a few times throughout the year where, again, you visit the gym at unsociable hours and will not be paid for it. This leads me to my next point, the banding system is hard to work with. You will be given a set number of PTs you can recruit and you may end up turning people away if are above your target recruitment number. However, even though you are ‘fully staffed’ you will likely end up taking a ton of classes and being a PT on your shift anyway. I once spoke to a GM who took a record 12 classes in a week. You can only hope you get a club with a lot of PTs. Certain kinds of your targets and work expectation will remain similar to clubs with double the amount of PTs you have aswell. Facilities and cleaning company not great either, many managers have been asked to scrub showers and toilets daily. You will also be expected to fundraise, produce and schedule social media content, arrange events and business coach in an average day, often with no staff. Then you will be expected to explain why you haven’t completed the tasks.

Pros

The only “good” thing is the small percentage of new equipment and that some gyms are 24 hours.

Cons

Management is unfair, cutting hours and expecting a single worker to handle the entire gym. Incredible staff are undervalued, while third-party cleaners and side services pretend to solve problems they don’t. Members are chaotic, shifts are impossible, and yet leadership refuses to hire properly. Think smarter, not cheaper.

We can see that you may be working with us currently, so would suggest that you reach out to either your Regional Manager or your HR Business Partner who will do their best to support.
