Pros

You get to work with lovely consultants. That makes your job enjoyable.

Cons

- I received “zero” training, they tend to withhold information so they could use it against you later. Every time I asked her to show me something, I was abruptly told that they are time poor, so I am not sure how I was meant to learn. - Favouritism was appalling, I was told that I need to help others but they don’t have to help me! - Bullying is very common, I was told by a manager when an employee and a manager don’t get along, HR will take manager’s side. - No work-life balance, I had to start at 6am, some nights I had to stay back till 8pm. Once we were told we should skip lunch break which is illegal and dodgy. Managers never see your hard work and take it for granted, in fact they treat you like you must start early and finish late. - I was considerably underpaid for the job I was doing, I was doing job of a senior payroll officer but I was paid as a junior, I was promised a pay rise and a new title which never happened! Another person in the team who was doing less than me was paid by 23k more than me because that person was a favourite! - Customer service was shocking, the normal culture was if a director or above emails you, you need to respond ASAP, but everyone else can wait. Employees emailed us for their leave issues (because it was never correct in the system) and since we were not allowed to respond without manager’s authorisation, they sometimes had to wait for months. The irony was I was asked to “mingle” with consultants and participate in their drinking event to become close to them. - One the other hand, payroll had no deadline, we had to open the pay run and enter details even when we were in the middle of running pay run if the request was from “a director or above”. - Bullying and gang up was the normal culture, you were bullied if you did not look like the managers or didn’t behave like them. - Guys said whatever they wanted and swore around ladies and they could get away with it. - Everyone is underpaid (unless you are a big boss), bonus is only for managers and there’s no benefits excepts for Bupa discount (which is a few dollars only). Parental leave is not great and there’s no work life balance, only managers are allowed to work from home. - You feel you are just a number. - The job was extremely stressful (I can’t believe I did that job for that salary!), the system does not work and the payroll system is outdated and not working at all. Everything is wrong and payrollers need to calculate and enter almost everything manually.
