Pros

Benefits. This is the only company I know which still offers a pension plan in addition to a 401K. Location; this office is right off major expressways in the Chicago western suburbs. Also, women are about 70% including the managers; this would be a pro if you thrive on their drama.

Cons

H-L is a third-rate company in various respects. It creates much of its own problems and usually fares worse than top competitors during economic downturns. Competence levels and professionalism among staff and managers are generally not very high, and the work processes are not well-conceived or organized. (For example, key customer service functions are split between local offices and remote service centers in India, resulting in endless confusion and frustration for both staff and customers. Also the simple act of billing a customer on a shipment involves several departments, even different offices around the world, and resolving a dispute can drag on for months and sometimes years.)

Pros

Good internship program, talks from different teams ensure that you become familiar with the shipping industry and how the company works. The people there are great. They love working there. Interns have scheduled meetings with senior leadership. Senior leadership is super easy to talk to and comfortable to be around.

Cons

It depends on the team, but some interns did not have a project/assignment ready for them to work on at the start.
