Pros
Some of the Teaching Assistants can be nice
Cons
I worked for this company thinking they were reputable, however, it is so bad that out of the hundred of other foreign teachers I met in training, none of them liked EF. For one, they will not follow your contract. There is a part of your contract where you can get a relocation loan and they will take a certain amount out of your paycheck every month until it is paid back. Except, they never took mine out and told me one week before my contract ended that I owed them a large amount of money. I had been under the impression that it was paid off. They took my entire last paycheck and I was stuck not being able to afford food. When I tried saying something to the national manager and product manager, they said I had to follow my contract and pay it back, which felt very ironic since they did not follow the contract. Several other people told me this happened to them too. Secondly, I was harassed by my manager. She would shout at me in front of people for nothing. Told me I had no choice in having private discussions with her. Blamed me for things that had nothing to do with me. Looked over my shoulder at my phone or computer often. And spread false rumors about me to my Chinese co-teachers. Any time I tried to go to upper management about it they made excuses for her behavior because they were her friends. Even the national manager brushed me off and made excuses. So if you see the comments where they act like they take your feedback seriously, they do not. The national manager came to our school one day and another foreign teacher told him about some of the issues at our school and he just told her if she didn’t like it, she didn't have to stay. Thirdly, my black foreign co-workers experienced a lot of racism from them. They would call them by each others names on purpose and say racist things in Chinese. Whenever I heard them say something offensive about me or them in Chinese, I tried to say something and their excuse was that I didn't know Chinese. I heard one of them refer to my foreign coworker as a "pig foreigner." My manager told an ethnically West Asian man that he was not allowed to wear black jeans despite it being in the handbook and my other coworker literally wearing light sweatpants two feet away. The fourth thing is that they say they will put teaching assistants in with you, but they almost always left me in classrooms alone. I once had a 4 year old that had trouble breathing and no one was around to help me. I had to stop class to help her regulate her breathing and shout into the hallways for someone to come because I couldn't leave her alone. I rarely had a PA or TA. When my kids acted badly, they did nothing about it. I had a kid hit me cause i took their star away and i had kids cursing at me in Chinese every day. No one did a thing and told me to ignore it. The fifth thing is that they act suspiciously. There is a policy in China which states that there are certain things that training schools in China are not allowed to do, but EF does them. They frequently have investigators looking at them. When an investigator came to my school, they told me to hide the students' books and sit on the side as if I was a tutor rather than the teacher. This company acts like they will support you and help you through navigating China, but in reality they will take up so much of your time and health. I got sick multiple times and rarely had any time to actually travel. You will basically be trapped there. Most of the foreign teachers that work for EF are recent college grads who do not have enough money to end their contract.
