Pros

Over my years at Amazon I had the pleasure to work with a number of different teams across the Alex org. Overall, you are working with very smart people who have a genuine desire to make their products the very best. It was technically challenging which I enjoyed. And of course you are working to a scale you'll only find at a handful of other companies. You get to work with A-type personalities for sure.

Cons

After a number of years, the pressure I experienced and saw to "raise the bar" through attrition just became too much. There are indeed quotas for turnover and there is indeed pressure for you to meet that quota. The rhetoric for "raising the bar" sounds great, but the implementation frankly sickened me. This is especially troubling when you realize that as a manager your ability to meet the goals through attrition is part of what makes you "promotable". For me, I finally couldn't stomach being pressured to go through the PIP process with members of my teams that I honestly thought were doing well. If you can do this and sleep at night, I would say you are good to go at Amazon.

Pros

Really smart people, a lot of opportunity for growth, always encouraged to be innovative, think big, and create something new. Competitive salary and benefits with other major tech companies. 100% self motivating work environment. No dress code and 4 legged friends are welcome.

Cons

You have to be self motivated. NO ONE will hold your hand and tell you that you're doing a great job. If you need constant affirmations from management, this company isn't for you.
