Pros

Take home work vehicle,cell phone.

Cons

Everything else. Way to many negatives to write here. For starters, they do not value the customer service aspect of the SERVICE Specialist position. They recently went to a nonsensical pay system where you have to reach a targeted dollar amount for every hour you work in order to make a good living ....Really? In what universe is that a good idea?so,the more hours it takes me to run my accounts the less I make, even though the reason that I spend extra time is in order to take care of the customers problems like they pay us to,or to drive to accounts hours away from where I live? Oh,wait,to be paid well we have to sell extra products and services even though we are not salesmen and dispite the fact that we do the dirty work, dealing with dangerous chemicals and the creepiest of the crawleys?Really?? Throw in the facts that they expect you to be in call 24\7 for free, there is no time for literally ANYTHING else in your life except Ecolab, you get Looney toon pages at any hour, management is clueless and\ or dishonest with the employees,a new person will work themselves to death for peanuts because they will have to take everyone's infestations while these same people lie to them and say they are their friends, they set you up to fail, the list goes on and on. This is a dirty, unsafe, way underpaid and under underappreciated, stressful, laborious, nonstop 24\7 nightmare of a job that has taken almost all of the joy out of my life.......

Pros

The work was sometimes interesting, the international travel was interesting.

Cons

I had a horrible experience; I worked very hard and did good work, which was not only not rewarded but seemed threatening to my male bosses. I am also a mom of a young child, for which I felt I was held back. I was willing to work long hours and travel but when I attempted to draw some boundaries I was punished and ridiculed. Really take a look at how many women there are in finance at a director level or above. And how many of them have children? There are very few, and the smartest and most talented leave. You really do have to be a young, good-looking white male with MBA to suceed here. If you are politicallly conservative and you hunt, fish or golf you will probably do well. I had four different bosses in the four years I worked at Ecolab. Three of them were bullies and had no sense of what it meant to be an ethical person. The one who wasn`t a jerk left.

Pros

You will be working with some very bright and talented people. Health benefits aren't great but they're there. The industry you work in, does make a difference. That is satisfying. Company car that can be used for personal use as well. Good company to pick up a lot of skills and knowledge. Room for upward career mobility if you are okay with working day and night in this thankless profession for a decade. Some customers are awesome. Most are very demanding though unfortunately.

Cons

Pay is not competitive if you live in a more expensive area. In the interview the job will be described as a "sales job" or "account manager" job but you will spend 85% of your time carrying pails around, throwing chemicals into cooling towers, and acting as a plumber. You "Make you own schedule" BUT have to work 14 hours per day, on the weekends, and on vacation to "stay caught up" or as management would say "To handle your business" Nalco has a customer first mentality. This results in high turnover of employees and abuse of employees time to meet unrealistic demands of customers. Salary + commission sounds nice but corporate will keep adding additional tasks to your plate to the point where you can barely find the time to sell and get that over target commission. Most of you time that you could be selling will be spent writing reports, responding to emergencies that aren't actually emergencies, and doing difficult to manage spreadsheets. They "Train" you but they don't. You will have to cram about 10,000 pages of material in 6 months then when you actually have a territory assigned to you none of the information you learned will be useful so you pretty much have to learn by trial and error. Company culture is atrocious- You are expected to eat, breath, and crap Ecolab. Anything less and you are viewed as a lazy and disgusting worker, even if your sales territory is up in revenue and profits constantly. Terrible work life balance. Taking work home. Anxiety thinking about work before bed. They will not directly say it but it is implied that furthering your education and having a life outside of work is frowned upon. Chemical exposure- since the "sales" job is actually 85% service technician you will need to be careful to long term exposure to chemicals. I have noticed a lot of the older people in the industry get "sick". You will get up to 50-100+ emails per day and will be expected to respond to all of them within a rolling 24 hours in addition to the multiple hours of driving you will be doing, hands on service, meetings, and reports you will need to complete. Every process you do is extremely tedious and overly complicated. It will take you an hour to produce a quote for a $500 piece of equipment for example.
