Pros

Up-to-date technology and innovative ideas. Competivie salary and benefits. Merit based bonus encourages employees to take ownership of their responsibilities. Great location.

Cons

Management is completely inaccessible due to their work overload. Due to the acquisition of Rohm and Haas there is no organizational structure. New employees (and even most of the senior staff) don't know who to go to when questions arise regarding supply chain, technical data, etc. Dow does not live up to their slogan "The Human Element". The bottom end of the pyramid is being ignored.

Politics Rules

Pros

Structure, Structure, Structure! If you are a person that enjoys structure in your life, then Dow is the company for you. There is a work process for every group (Engineering, Operations, Maintenance, etc.), a procedure for every task, job descriptions and boundaries for every role. This is not necessarily a negative as the chemical industry needs this type of control due to the hazards involved with chemical processes.

Cons

Like many large companies, politics rules at Dow especially around promotions. You can work hard, get very good performance reviews, good bonuses and positive feedback from peers but if you aren't in the "click", you aren't going to get promoted. If this happens, you need to move on to another site or function within Dow or pursue employment outside of Dow. Don't waste your time trying to "wait things out" because once the promotion block is in place, it won't be easy to remove.
