Keep Looking, You Can Do Better Than This Place

Pros

Unfortunately at the time that I worked there there was very little that was positive to say about the place. If you love horses there is (used to be?) a modest employee discount. There are some great people employed there but most are too afraid to even take a coffee break to chat.

Cons

There is a large warehouse full of workers and also some spaces for finance, ecommerce, customer service, IT, accounting, etc, which is where I worked. The office space is cramped and filthy with limited broken office furniture and supplies. The corporate structure was flat, with three old, white male owners and their entourage of hangers on at the top, everyone else was at the bottom. Corporate culture was nonexistent. Professionals sat working silently, heads down ...all day. Most were afraid to break for lunch and there was an overall attitude of disapproval if people took a sick day, or dared to use all of their meager vacation. It was also expected that you would be available 24/7 even while on vacation. You were expected to be in the office, on time despite a snow state of emergency and regardless of being able to work from home. Every year it was mandatory for ALL employees to work Friday, Saturday, Sunday after Thanksgiving from 7am to 7pm doing inventory in the warehouse. There were no exceptions (8 month pregnancy included), and no compensation for this work. There was a lot on frustration with the three owner's lack of knowledge when it came to current technologies and modern management styles. There were a handful of positive, optimistic people (who have since left) but overall the prevailing mood was one of depression and defeat.

Dover Saddlery has undergone various leadership changes over the past year. We now have in place a committed, fair, and progressive CEO, a horse owner himself, who is rebuilding leadership and supporting the staff on all levels. His approach is to listen and learn , then lead. He has travelled to all 34 stores and interviewed every office staff member to learn about the concerns, ideas, and recommendations for Dover Saddlery in the areas they can affect. New things to Dover include a "we listen" page on line where our customers can write to us and weigh in, our CEO personally reads and responds to these comments. We hold frequent Town Hall Meetings where open communication about the current state of the business and ideas for the future are shared with all employees , videotaped copies are streamed to all of our store locations as well. Dover’s mission to provide world class service to our customers and provide quality products for horse and riders on every level, remains the number one goal of our company. The team is comprised of people who love horses and the lifestyle – the passion for what we do and the dedication and work ethic from the entire staff is inspiring.

Pros

I worked at the corporate location in Littleton MA, where there is no store-front. Everyone is incredibly nice and fun to work with. Customer Service can get very busy especially around the Holidays, but the atmosphere is great since everyone is like-minded. Dogs (quiet and well-behaved) are allowed to come in and sit at your desk, and this makes the work day 100x better! The pay was decent, and the employee discount tremendously helped. There was room to move around and interview within the different departments. If you show up on time and do your job you can go far!

Cons

Upper Management seemed to change often, but it seems like there's finally some good knowledgeable people. Not sure if that's an actual con though..
