Poor Work Life Balance

Pros

The only good reason to work for Dollar General is they are expanding during an economic crisis.

Cons

As a store manager there is zero work-life balance. Store managers are expected to work 6 days a week and often times do not get there one day off. If there is a call in you have to go in and cover it if you can't find anyone else. Store managers are expected to do a majority of the task because the company does not trust anyone else to do them. The store manager is the only one that can receive the truck, which is delivered once a week and usually has a window of delivery that spands 10 hours. Often times the truck does not come in on time, and is delivered outside of the window. Once the truck comes it usually takes 1.5 - 3.5 hours to unload depending on size. A lot of times store managers are stuck working just 14 to 16 hours on a truck day.

Pros

Flexibility in scheduling and working with most of the nice customer is only positive thing i can say, Great customers who shop there.

Cons

long hours, insuffient pay, terrible feedback from district supervisor. I started in July '08 as a store manager with no DG experience. By the time I was sent to formal training in mid september, I saw my district manager twice for a total of 90 minutes. I put in 50 and 55 hours weeks with no compensation. If and hourly employee worked that many hours, with their overtime, they would make more money than i did. Most mornings there is just one employee for 4-6 hours alone. Can't tell you how many times I nearly had bathroom accidents because you just can't get away from the register. I have never worked for a company who is more concerned for how a store looks for an executive coming for a visit than how it looks for the customer. Overall, terrible place to work.

Pros

It's employment, that is available because of the very high turn over. Managers are required to work 6 days a week 4 day hours and 2 night closings. With this type of schedule, TURN OVER is very high. So, getting a job is very easy.

Cons

No family time. 6 days a week, very long hours. Payroll is extremely low. Alone in store for many hours cashiering, unable to complete work without support staff. Support staff is paid $7.35 to $8.00 an hour for asst managers. Managers are unable to pay more during hiring because we do not have the payroll to pay more. Call outs are covered by the manager. Be prepared to work many weeks with no days off. Work here only if you need to until the economy turns. You are used, used, used, and thrown away like a dirty rag when they are done with you. Very rare to be told you are doing a great job, always told how much more you could have done, while at the register, alone in store !
