Lost in global firm

Pros

Smart people and good work.

Cons

Chicago office has dwindled in absolute size and relative importance in global firm. Few opportunities and less recognition as global management is always looking for something new and shiny and ignores excellent legal work and client service.

Pros

Lots of work, and in some cases good work. The pay is comparable to other firms of the same size in the same area. The benefits package is very comprehensive.

Cons

The high turnover puts the firm at risk for limitations claims. Clients are often upset that their files are turned over to new lawyers regularly. There are significant office politics and little in-office communication. Very few new lawyers stay long enough to become partner. Their cost overhead to be 'international' must be obscene, and the place operates no more efficiently than a government, Management asks for truthful feedback but incentivizes the complete opposite. Strangely, despite the firm's size there is little in the way of in-house development programs, and most junior lawyers are left to either sink or swim.

Pros

Opportunity to work on global projects The marketing, IT , finance, HR and office service people are hard working and get along very well (why can't the lawyers and assistants learn from them) The few events we do have are great - summer/holiday party; halloween; blue jays day Do a lot of work in diversity and pro bono - My son who identifies as gay is proud of the work Dentons does (PLEASE DO MORE LIKE YOU USE TO - It means so much!) Summer hours and casual days Great office space Close to the GO Train / TTC Located in the financial district/downtown core

Cons

Overworked and underpaid compared to other similar organizations Pulled into many directions - regional, local and global with no support Top-heavy NO RECOGNITION from lawyers and management Lawyers treat staff with disrespect and undervalue the amount of work they do Little to no community involvement, employee engagement and social events Internal events are very segregated between Lawyers/students and staff Technology is very difficult and systems outdated - why does it take so long to get things done? Why are common things like payslips still paper? Need to be more environmentally friendly
