Pros

A consulting career at Deloitte opens up lot of career opportunities when you want to make a move outside of Deloitte

Cons

Deloitte is a sweatshop, company culture is not very different from the culture portrayed at Amazon in the New York time Article. In consulting, the utilization targets are pretty high, add to that travel time and time one is expected to spend in the office and internal firm activities and one will average 50-60 hours a week consistently. This is not a place to work unless you foresee yourself making it to Partner or Director. Deloitte is a great place to work if you are right out of college and this is your first job. Deloitte experience looks great on your resume if you are going to apply for business school and get an MBA, and most college grads work here for a couple of years and go get their Business Degrees. But, Deloitte is not a great place to work for people without a consulting background or people who have been in industry for a long time. Management makes it known that the culture is very competitive and it is survival of the fittest: they openly acknowledge that only a select handful will stay at the company for the long-term and make partner\director at the firm. Advise to new-hires is not to waste much time at Deloitte. Decide for yourself in a year or two of joining, if you are in the good graces of your senior leadership and if you can enjoy the gravy train of promotions and raises and be able to work your way up the leadership chain. If not, there are better opportunities outside of Deloitte, you will be wasting your time here with sub-par reviews, raises and opportunities. The performance management system at Deloitte is the most burdensome and obnoxious one I have seen in my career. Rest assured that mid-year and year-end reviews will be the most stressful and unappealing time of the year at Deloitte (several Partners and Directors will private acknowledge this as well). The ratings are bell-curved on a scale of 1-5 and most practitioners are expected to fall in the middle 70% rating of 3. The highest ratings of 1 and 2 are reserved for the folks that have brown-nosed partners and senior manager through the course of the year. Most folks will be forced into the middle and given the standard 3% raise and a small bonus. The lowest raters of 4 and 5 are typically 'counselled-out' of the firm. Favoritism and nepotism are rooted solid in Deloitte, and, if you not part of the 'in crowd' or the 'old boys club' look elsewhere.

Pros

If you fall into the lap of a right Partner or Senior Manager and you perform well, life can be good for you. Or if you are a 21 year old pretty girl out of college. ( I am SERIOUS, not being sarcastic) People are surprising friendly. Eat well on the corporate card.

Cons

Indentured Labor. Partners and Directors will treat you like you are at their perpetual servitude. I noticed their treatment of Deloitte India resources on a project in US. They made them work like dogs, just a step short of putting them in shackles. Terrorized them nightly by making rounds at 11 pm etc... Highly unethical behavior by Partners an Directors on projects, they have come to believe they are golden gods, will smile at your face but treat you like dirt. WIll force you to work 80/100 per week. If you complain, they will say don't abuse yourself and then come after you like thunder.

Pros

As other folks have mentioned, it's a good resume builder, particularly if you are a CPA. I worked for Deloitte for 8 years in various professional services management roles within management/strategy consulting, technology and financial advisory services. The staff you'll work with are absolutely great. Smart, mostly good-natured, team-oriented.

Cons

Wow, where to begin. There are so many. As someone else suggested, if you can go in with a firm plan to only remain there 2 years, then definitely do it. Lifestyle is pretty poor. You will work many hours to be viewed as a 'team player'. They WILL pay you well for it. And chances are 2 years will slip by and you'll still be there, cursing yourself for your love of the money. The marketing department is a world onto itself. It seems to spend all day generating glossy e-brochures we'd get telling us how great work/life balance is (maybe it is for them, but not for the rest of us). The partners don't read or follow this stuff. Utilization is king. If you aren't busy on a billable engagement, no one cares what you bring to the table. Seriously, it is irrelevant. Partners are solely about profit. To the point when times get tough, they immediately move to layoff their talent. Keep in mind, this is professional services, so they're laying off the folks they'll need when the goodtimes return. I wish I had left this firm after 2-3 years. I made good money, got the promotions, yadda yadda. But there is a limited return on your level of effort. The consulting work is definitely 'generalist' and constantly changing. You don't get some amazing skillset that makes you irreplaceble. And the partnership overhypes their staff talent to clients to justify an average billing rate in the $500's. I mean, would you pay $20K a week for some college kid or MBA who didn't know your industry and the particular problem at hand thoroughly? Of course not. And so, you are stuck in the middle between unreasonable (but understandable) client expectations and a partnership which just wants it done well enough to collect receipts.
