Good Company Not Great

Business Outlook

Pros

DPR has good benefits, regional offices provide activities for families, and the company takes care of its employees from a cultural perspective.

Cons

Pay is good but not great; the company leans on its culture as part of the package. There is no real growth for PM's or Sr. PM's in established offices. The hierarchy is determined by tenure and not capabilities. If you are a good PM they will not let you off the job site, and you will be placed on more and more difficult projects with lower and lower quality PEs. The regions are controlled by a few people who are not the BULs. Senior leadership cares more about soft issues and storytelling than instilling work ethic and teaching people how to be builders. We shouldn't have to convince people we're here to build great things, we should be able to show it. They also have a problem with older tenured employees who no longer want to "work" getting moved into people roles instead of asking them to leave. It's frustrating seeing someone with no responsibility making multiple times your salary that offers nothing tangible to the company. The change from when I first started to when I left was tangible, which was the cause of my leaving.

Falling from greatness

Pros

Great people, positive culture, decent benefits, training and exciting projects. Great place to start a career and learn. Also has great opportunities if you're willing to relocate.

Cons

Average salaries and weak bonuses for the area. SF Bay Area pay hasn't kept up compared to competitors and its showing. The turn over has been brutal and doesn't show any signs of stopping. Top performers get very little for their efforts and people are noticing. Company wastes so much money on worthless entities like Vueopps and EIG.

Pros

The company overall has ambitious goals and great idea of what they want their culture to be. Very social, lots of parties.

Cons

Highly disorganized outside of the corporate offices, so that means on a project team you are bound to deal with a lot of this chaos, so it is highly dependent on who's team you're in. Not everyone buys in to the company's principles and culture which is hugely problematic and at the end of the day, this company is just another GC, and you will just be another cog in their money machine who they will work like you have no other purpose in life.
