Pros

You will get a lot of substantive experience, even as a junior associate. Pro bono hours count towards billable requirements. You'll work with lots of very, very smart people who can help you become excellent at what you do, if you pay attention and soak it up.

Cons

If you're looking at BigLaw, you already know what the cons are - long hours, high stress, and you're made to feel guilty if you take vacation or need to attend to personal issues.

Still just a law firm

Pros

If you want to work at a "California firm", Cooley is one of the better ones. You'll learn California drafting, law, common sense approaches. It's cool to work with start up and tech companies.

Cons

It's just another law firm. You are not getting any kind of "Cooley culture" that will somehow transform your life as a junior associate! The same emphasis on billable hours as any other firm, same challenges actually making and staying partner, same poor management as is typical for any organization run by lawyers!
