Aggressively focused on improving

Pros

I've only worked at CloudLock for a short time, however I have enjoyed my tenure thus far. Probably the most pervasive attitude I get from management, other teams, and my coworkers is a desire to get better all the time. It seems that management knows the company's flaws, and actively works to improve them, not being afraid to hire new talent or try something new. Team members are consistently talking about how to improve the product, through features, fixes, or refactors. The singular focus on the product makes improving easier, and it is also refreshing, when compared to other companies that need to "pivot" or don't have a confident sense of core competencies. As a culture, there is a high focus on collaboration and community. The open floor plan and Macbook pros make collaborating around the office very easy, and the whiteboard-painted walls give people plenty of space to draw stuff out and brainstorm. A variety of collaboration tools make sharing and contributing very easy. Finally, asking for help is encouraged, and everyone is willing to answer questions/bounce ideas/provide feedback. I don't think I've been turned down or told to wait when asking for help. The soft perks of the company are great too. Free gym on premises, beer fridge, snacks, video games, ping pong and relaxed work-from-home/vacation policy all contribute to making it a pretty nice place to work.

Cons

We have satellite offices in the UK, Israel and Ukraine, and cross-location communication can be a bit tough, with both timezones and language barrier being occasionally difficult. In the Waltham office, we're split between two suites, which limits the cross-team collaboration, but there have been steps taken to address this issue. From an engineering side, there are some typical start-up, and even not-so-startup growing pains, like little documentation, some confusing noodle-y code, gaps in systems/infrastructure, etc. As I said previously, however, management knows about these and has taken steps to address those issues.

Pros

Really great co-workers in Waltham that are easy to get along with. Pay is decent and work/life balance is pretty much whatever you choose. Free lunches on Friday are above average. The local HR and office management is great and have created a cozy work environment. The chickenllama is an adorable mascot!

Cons

The dysfunction in the engineering organization makes it practically impossible to get anything done. Small tasks usually turn into huge projects because of all the accumulated technical debt and bikeshedding. There's terrible development practices, QA practices, release practices, operations practices, security practices, communication, leadership, death march projects, etc. You name it, CloudLock engineering is bad at it. Bad practices wouldn't necessarily be a problem if management expended any effort to actually fix the issues. They might occasionally say that they agree with you but nothing ever changes. There have been one or two reorganizations during my tenure, I guess to try to "fix" the problems, but it's still the same ambiguous processes, broken leadership, and teams with ambiguous purposes and no accountability.

CloudLock Response

Thanks very much for your feedback, both positive and constructive. We’re glad to hear you’ve found the people and environment so pleasant to work with! On the flip side, we hear you on some of the things that aren’t working. One of the interesting challenges of joining a startup is figuring out how to scale both a product and team and the change management required to navigate those phases of growth. At this point we’re a year plus post acquisition with Cisco and have the resources and buy-in we need to address engineering practice improvements that you recommended. We’re committed to continuous improvement and hope you’ll be part of that process. -Jess, Head of Employee Success

Pros

CloudLock is a dedicated team of highly skilled, innovative, agile and collaborative people. We have a lot of fun while working our tails off. The "no a-hole policy" is totally true. Like all companies we experience some turnover, but to me that's a good thing! CloudLock is not for the faint of heart. You will be empowered to go above and beyond on a daily basis and that challenge can be too much for some.

Cons

With growth come logistical challenges especially with our team spread across the globe. I look forward to the team finding creative ways to continue to be cohesive and connected.
