Pros

Competitive salaries with the market. A significant number of talented people to work with and learn from. A diverse culture within every department. Great benefits for health and finance.

Cons

Uses the GE philosophies on employee reviews using a bell curve to evaluate and a mandatory number of employees must be in the top range to be promoted and the bottom in a high pressure situation to quit or be fired. The average or core personnel are given the carrot of still getting a bonus, but no promotion or raise. The environment leads to a lot of back stabbing and almost no collaboration between peers who fear giving someone an advantage over them during reviews. One of the most dysfunctional places I have ever worked.

Pros

Telecommuting is encouraged Teams are competent and unified Internal transfers are easy Code ownership is shared to relieve pressure against vacations Training and higher education is supported

Cons

Micromanagement is rampant and backed up by a culture of fear External tools are poorly chosen, overvalued as silver bullets, and not optimized to fit the needs of developers Employee evaluation system is based on an individual's reputation for working long hours, oratory skills in meetings, powerpoint skills in presentations, and popularity with upper management Advice of developers is disregarded by technical leads and managers, yet failure is always attributed to a lack of effort and communication among the team Project marketing and team size are used as leverage among management, leading to unhealthy competition between teams, code redundancy, and useless features creeping into requirement lists Hard work is not rewarded as much as shameless self promotion and socializing outside the office Deadlines and milestones are decided without any input from developers implementing the requests

Pros

I spent over a decade at this company and here are my thoughts. - USE TO BE a great company - USE TO have great compensation - You USE TO be appreciated - You USE to be empowered - If you are wanting a divorce or more time away from home, then this place is for you - if you are Upper Managment, then you still have great pay and bonuses If you still decide to come to work for Cisco, then be sure that you negotiate a great salary prior to starting. This will be it for at least a decade.

Cons

- They brag on how they value a balance of personal and work.. But if you are an engineer, then this does not apply - Pay freeze since 2001 - Merit Increase freeze - Bonus are a fraction of what they once were and shrinking every year - Benefits are shrinking Advancement is non-existent Training on new products is a joke Taking personal time off is frowned on (considering mgmt thinks that it your an engineer you should not have a personal life nor want to be home when you are sick) What you need sleep too? Imagine if you can, taking a simple situation then have management put the most convoluted, backward processes on it so that it hampers any progress and makes your job harder by a thousand fold. Then when the project takes too long, or just fails it can not be their fault. (Even though they have you are doing the work of three engineers. ) Nope it has to be you did not prioritize it right. " What you want to get 4 hours sleep? "
