Pros

Friendly co-workers, inclusive culture, good work/life balance, most people get every other Friday off. I have been treated well and have never been asked to work through nights or weekends. Overall the company is a well organized and well run machine.

Cons

Little career growth potential in the SF bay area, especially with low oil prices and recently announced lay offs (many jobs being relocated to Texas or overseas anyway, eventually HQ expected to go to Texas as well). Not a progressive culture; being a 100 year old oil company it is more interested in preserving the status quo than investing in alternative/renewable energy sources that we will eventually need to convert to. HQ in San Ramon feels very sterile and quiet despite its size. Plenty of room and potential to make it a much more lively and compelling office campus. The company is extremely image conscious and pushes the espousal of safety to absurd limits, especially for an office environment that does not come with the same set of industrial dangers that a refinery or an exploration field would.

Pros

Ok starting salary but nothing compared to engineers and union workers Good 401K matching (2% contribution to 8% match) Pension after 5 years

Cons

Extremely poor management Office politics are ever present and management will hold you back to ensure you don't succeed Union workers (operators and mechanics) will easily out earn you and be offered more career advancement opportunities Further education needs to be approved by management, that is it needs to be a business need, although the company says they'll reimburse you for 75% tuition Company is definitely more engineer friendly Poor career opportunities unless you are an engineer

Pros

Great opportunities, friendly culture that promotes employee career growth, managers and coworkers respect you. Sincere about work-life balance and wants more people to become "lifers." If you don't like your current job or team, the organization is large and flexible enough to find a place where you do.

Cons

Can become a bit dull, culture of wanting to be "the fastest follower" rather than the innovators, culturally conservative and risk-averse. More people are process followers rather than process makers/creative thinkers. Extremely inflexible for international-hire employees or those in certain, more remote locations. Many talented and longer term employees left for other equivalent or better opportunities because of this.
